The first month of 2009 started very quitely, with no significant rain for 13 days. Add this to the last few weeks of December which were also dry, gave us nearly 1 month of dry weather. February
February was following on the theme of January, with a significant dry spell at the end of the month. Temperatures were up a little from January, but still in line with what is expected for this month. February also gave us some snow which caused many travel disruptions around the country. Ottery had around 7cm of snowfall in total.

May was another dry month, and temperatures were very warm especially at the end of the month. Hopefully this will continue into the summer, although with this limited rainfall perhaps a hosepipe ban is going to be along soon ?
Unfortunatly, the server experienced an outage for 5 days and we have no data points for the period of 20th - 25th May. The source of the outage has been examined and alternatives have been put in place to stop this happening again.

Wow, What a scorcher !! With very high temperatures a light winds, the summer heatwave started. More like the summers we used to know back in 2006 and before !! Again, low rainfall which prompts me to think that the hosepipe ban is not far off, however no one has mentioned it yet. Hopefully this weather will be set to continue right through the summer.

Just as we all feared, the rain came in July. Over 100 mm of rain, and nearly every day with substantial rain. As I write on the first day of August, it's still raining. The Met Office have revised their forecast for the summer, from their initial "BBQ Summer" phrase to "above average rainfall". I think it's a bit early to say this, as we still have August to go and a dry sept and october could be around the corner. We also have to remember that we have had 100mm less rain this year, compared to last year.

Not a record breaking August, but it's been a rather average one. At least the rain did'nt come down like last month. Wonder when we will have a really hot summer again ? Temperatures were fairly static, around the 23 degrees mark.
Station note : The flat lines at the end of the month were due to a USB bus problem with the 1-wire sensors. There appears to be an issue with the VMWare hypervisor loosing the USB devices which need to be manually re-attached. This has been reported as an issue to Vmware.

A bit more rain this month, but nothing like 12 months ago !! 54mm is still not a lot of rain, and well below average. This year has been very dry compared to the last few so it will be interesting to see what effect this has on the winter weather, and spring next year.

November 2009 was a wet one !! Rain, Rain and more Rain was the defining factor this month with not many days without some kind of rain. December
December 2009 ended the year with a cold snap, and snow around the UK. Unfortunatly in Ottery we didn't get any snow. Temperatures were well below observed temps over the last 4 years and thick ice formed on the roads making driving interesting. No Ice days during Decemeber, however this is expected, January & February typically have more Ice Days than other months.

2009
Overall in 2009, it has been a colder year than expected, however rainfall was not as much as 2008 (-140 mm). Actual fallen rain on a monthly basis was even (+/- 40 mm) apart from July and November, and November was recorded as the wettest since records began by UKMO.
We had no major weather events this year, and Ottery cleaned up after the flood of October 2008. There are still some reminders when walking around the town that it happened. We had the BBC here in Dec 08, and the programme was on-air on the 4th Feb 2009. This is listed under our publicity page. The basis of the programme was looking at amateur weather recorders and that some of us actually forecast the weather. We were challenged to forecast against the UKMO, which reassuringly the Met Office won !!
Station reliability was much improved in 2009 after moving to a bigger server and re-design of the infrastructure. Using a Linux Host Server, and moving to Vista for the Application Server increased the available processing power and allowed the full automation of forecasts, data gathering and system monitoring. Uptime for the System was only interrupted twice, once because of a USB Bus Fault, isolated to a bug in a Instrumentation Driver and a power cut which exceeded the capacity of the UPS.
Our forecasting reliability was also improved by using new data feeds and using the new versions of WXSIM. We are using the data collected and forecasts made in 2009 to further calibrate the model in conjunction with the software author.
For 2010, the station will be enhanced with new sensors. The UV sensor that didn't make it in 2009 will be configured along with an additional number of temperature sensors. There will also be integration with the Vaisala CT12K Ceilometer that we have acquired. This addition to the station will provide data on cloud layers, heights and sky conditions in real time. The device itself is currently undergoing servicing and calibration ready for configuration and output to this site, however testing has identified that it should provide some excellent data on which to correlate against already recorded data such as solar and ground temperatures.
